A maladaptive pattern of substance abuse, leading to significant impairment or distress in THREE OR MORE symptoms for 12+ months

Need for increased amounts, withdrawal, unsuccessful efforts to control use, giving up social activities

Common substance abuse?
Stimulants (stimulates neural activity), depressants (inhibits neural activity), hallucinogens (alter sensory perceptions)

Bio-psycho-social models of addiction?
Physical dependence (tolerance and withdrawal), psychological dependence (mood altering effects)

Social learning theories of addiction?
Imitation, classical conditioning, and operant conditioning

Social explanation of addiction?
Availability, eg. environment and cost

Personality and addiction?
Traits like low self-esteem, anxiety prone, thill-seeking or rebellious may make someone more likely to abuse substances

Treatments?
CBT, medication, abstinence. May be relapses, often caused by stress
