how did hitler exploit the reichstag fire?
marinus vander lubbe (dutch communist) arrested for crime - nazis quick to blame communists. hitler persuaded hindenburg to pass emergency law.the 'law for the protection of the people and the state'. gave police control (to stop communists)

what happened in the march 1933 elections?
nazis did well and were the largest party. 288 seat (44% of the vote). hitler was disappointed as not an overall majority, but he then got the support of the nationalist party which gave hiim a majority. heavily armed SA men to scare other politician

what was the enabling law?
gave hitler the right to pass any law he wanted without asking president hindenburg or the reichstag. this meant basically that hitler could be a dictator but he had to get 2/3 of reichstag to vote in favour of law as it would change the constitution

how did hitler get 2/3 majority?
the SA continued with violence and threats (many social democrats didnt turn up to vote) the 81 communist members of the reichstag were expelled. enabling act was passed 441-94 votes

what did hitler do to remove his enemies?
law against formation of new parties (july 1933): only nazi party allowed. trade unions banned (may 1933) & all workers to become part of the german labour front. political opponents arrested & sent to concentration camps. important jobs to nazis

what was the german labour front?
The German Labour Front was the National Socialist German Workers' Party labour organisation which replaced the various independent trade unions in Germany after Adolf Hitler's rise to power

what was the night of the long knives?
30th june 1934, hitler ordered ** to arrest hundreds of SA leaders. including ernst rohm (leader of the SA) up to 400 people were killed in the night of the long knives

why did it happen?
hitler saw rohm as a potential rival. the german army saw the SA as a rival and promised to help hitler only if the SA were disbanded. SA were thugs and hitler didnt want to risk the support of rich businessmen

what happened on the 2nd August 1934?
president hindenburg died. hitler combined the jobs of president and chancellor into one and was known as the fuhrer (the leader). the army swore as oath of personal allegiance
