didn't need parliamentary consent- to regulate trade.By 1606 - going to the Crown. John Bates refused to pay on currants he was importing. As a result it was found to be the Crown's prerogative. 70,000 raised in one year-much more rapid than farming.

How did Salisbury increase James' income?
Started in 1608 as Lord Treasurer. He followed up on recusant fines, subsidy collectors who hadn't paid their takings. Crown lands - efficiently managed the woods and properties.

Higher entry fees for crown tenants. Book of Bounty - lists of grants available to courtiers - stemed James' generosity. An extra 100,000 pound per year added to the royal coffers.
