Hormones STRENGTH- Dabbs et al (1987)
Measured testosterone in the saliva of 89 male prisoners, some involved in violent crime others in non-violent crime. Testosterone levels were higher in those involved in violent crime.
1 of 7
Hormones STRENGTH- Barzman et al (2013)
Looked @ hormones in the saliva of 7-9 yr old boys. Obtained aggression ratings from nurses + found that cortisol in the saliva correlated with the number of aggressive incidents. It's only a correlation = not causation.
2 of 7
Hormones STRENGTH- Chang et al (2012)
Found aggression (measured by how aggressively fish react to a mirror image of itself) and boldness (measured by readiness to emerge from shelter) correlated with the amount of testosterone + cortisol before the behaviours.
3 of 7
Hormones STRENGTH of reliability and credibility.
Both human and animal studies have found a link between cortisol, testosterone + aggression, meaning the findings have reliability and credibility.
4 of 7
Hormones WEAKNESS of reductionism
Explaining aggression as simply resulting from hormones is far too reductionist, with a holistic explanation being more likely.
5 of 7
Hormones WEAKNESS of generalisability
Much research has been done on animals, which limits the generalisability of the findings due to some brain areas that are affected by testosterone serving different functions across species.
6 of 7
Hormones WEAKNESS of the chicken and the egg.
Direction of causality is an issue. Maybe testosterone doesn't cause aggression, maybe aggressive behaviour causes the production of testosterone
