Homeostasis

?
What is Homeostasis
Maintaining a constant internal environment
1 of 21
What does it control?
Blood glucose levels, water content, ion content and body temperature
2 of 21
What happens if there is too much or little water in the body?
Too much water will cause the cell to swell up (by osmosis through a semipermeable membrane) and will cause the cell to burst. Too little water will cause the cell to shrivel up and burst.
3 of 21
How does water entire the body?
By food and drink. Aerobic respiration also.
4 of 21
What happens if there is too little water in the body?
Hypothalamus detects little water. Pituitary glands release more ADH. Tubules made more permeable to reabsorb more water. Less water lost in urine. Small volume of concentrated urine.
5 of 21
What is the temperature inside the body?
37
6 of 21
What doe receptors do?
Detect changes in the environment
7 of 21
What does a process centre do?
Receives information and co-ordinates a response
8 of 21
What do effectors do?
Produce a response.
9 of 21
What is negative feedback?
Ensures any changes are reversed and returned back to set level.
10 of 21
What happens if we get too hot?
Hairs will lie flat, sweating will increase, vasodilation
11 of 21
What happens if we get too cold?
Hairs stand on end, sweating will decrease, vasoconstriction, shivering.
12 of 21
What do the kidneys do?
Controlling the water concentration of the blood plasma
13 of 21
What happens to the water content when it is hot outside?
We sweat more so we lose more water which makes the blood plasma concentrated. More water will be reabsorbed at the kidneys.
14 of 21
What happens to the water content when we exercise?
We sweat more and lose water so blood plasma concentration increases. More water is reabsorbed at the kidneys.
15 of 21
What happens when we drink lots of fluids?
Dilute blood plasma. Dilute urine to excrete excess water.
16 of 21
What happens when we eat more salt?
Increase blood plasma concentration. More water is reabsorbed in the kidneys.
17 of 21
What does alcohol do to water balance?
The kidneys produce dilute urine which means less water in the blood. This leads to dehydration.
18 of 21
What does ecstasy do to water balance?
The kidneys reabsorb lots of water creating concentrated urine. tHERE IS TOO MUCH WATER IN THE BLOOD.
19 of 21
What effect does alcohol have on ADH?
It suppresses ADH secretion causing less water to be absorbed
20 of 21
What effect does ecstasy have on ADH?
It increases ADH secretion causing too much water to be reabsorbed.
