What was the aim of the study?
To investigate whether there is a genetic basis for anorexia by studying MZ and DZ twins where at least one twin suffered from anorexia.
1 of 12
How many pt's were there and who were they?
30 female twin pairs, 4 male twin pairs and one set of male triplets.
2 of 12
What was used to determine whether the twins were identical?
Blood tests were used.
3 of 12
Even though one twin was suffering with anorexia, why did they collect data on the other twin?
To check for concordance.
4 of 12
What was the concordance rate for MZ twins?
55%
5 of 12
What was the concordance rate from DZ twins?
7%
6 of 12
How many of the female co twins had some sort of mental ilness?
5
7 of 12
Did any of the male co twins or triplets have anorexia?
No
8 of 12
The anorexic male twins tended .....
to have been disadvantaged from birth and to be the less dominant of the pair.
9 of 12
What was the conclusion?
The results support the view that anorexia has some genetic basis among females. No conclusions can be drawn from the data from the male twins due to small numbers.
10 of 12
What were the strengths of the study?
A more recent study by Bulik concluded that anorexia is 56% genetic. Was a natural experiment and so the IV was naturally occuring and not manipulated.
11 of 12
What were the weaknesses of the study?
The high concordance rate could be down to how the twins are treated in the home. The sample size is small and unrepresentative. It cannot explain the increase in anorexia in the last 30 years. Other variables such as environment and culture.
