What was the aim of the study?
To investigate doctor-nurse relationships - to see whether a nurse would be obedient to a doctor when asked to do something that goes against the rules of the workplace.

Stratified sampling. 22 ward nurses, the questionnaire was given to 12 graduate nurses and 21 student nurses.

In public and private hospitals across mid-west USA.

When the nurses followed the instructions, or went to get advice, or became upset, or became unwilling.

21 nurses went to administer the medication. 11 said they knew of the drug guidelines but would give the drug anyway. 10/12 graduates said they wouldn't take the orders. All of the students said they wouldn't take the orders.

Despite possibly endangering someones life, a nurse will obey a doctors orders even if they think they won't.

What were the controls?
-the nurse was always alone on the ward. -doctor always read from a script over the phone. -the placebo medication was placed in the same cabinet on each ward. -same doctor on the phone.

Evaluate the methodological strengths and weaknesses.
-field experiment so mundane realism. -lots of controls. -all of the nurses that answered the questionnaire agreed that situations like the study did sometimes arise, improving validity. -gender differences could have impacted results, so out of date

-Ptps debriefed. -Ptps but under psychological harm. -Ptps could give no informed consent. -Ptps not really given the right to withdraw as they were unaware they were in the study.
