1929: american stock market crashed. led to economic depression in america and many other countries including germany

started 1929 (caused by the wall street crash). many american banks recalled the loans they'd made to german companies. German businesses began to close. by 1932, 6 million germans were unemployed. many became homeless - couldnt afford rent/ mortgage

people felt let down by the weimar government - turned to extremist parties. Nazis tried to appeal workers (promised them work) and businessmen who'd lost everything were persuaded Hitler could solve the economic crisis.

the nazi share of the vote increased from 18% in 1930 to 38% (230 seats) = largest party in the reichstag. hitler demanded to be made chancellor but president hindenburg refused. von schleicher became chancellor but didnt have support of the public.
