reichstag fire - february 1933
the parliament building is set on fire and a dutch communist, van der lubbe, is caught. this gave hitler an oppurtunity to imprison many communist leaders and allowed the nazis to say the country was in danger from them.

general election - march 1933
only 44 per cent of the population vote for the nazis, who win 288 seats in the reichstag.

enabling act - march 1933
the stormtroopers intimidated all the non-nazi deputies to vote to give hitler power to make his own laws.

peoples courts - april 1934
hitler set up the nazi's peoples courts where judges have to swear an oath of loyalty to hitler

trade unions - may 1933
trade unions are abolished and their leaders arrested. this allowed hitler to destroy a group that would oppose him.

political parties - july 1933
other political parties are banned - only the nazi party is allowed to exist. germans could no longer get rid of hitler in an election.

night of the long knives - june 1934
the stormtroopers demand to take over the army. hitler cannot afford to annoy the business men or the army so the SS murders 400 stormtroopers including the leader rohm. this gave power to the brutal SS

hindenburg dies. hitler declares himself jointly president, chancellor and head of the army and absolute ruler of germany
