reichstag fire - february 1933
the parliament building is set on fire and a dutch communist, van der lubbe, is caught. this gave hitler an oppurtunity to imprison many communist leaders and allowed the nazis to say the country was in danger from them.

only 44 per cent of the population vote for the nazis, who win 288 seats in the reichstag.

the stormtroopers intimidated all the non-nazi deputies to vote to give hitler power to make his own laws.

hitler set up the nazi's peoples courts where judges have to swear an oath of loyalty to hitler

trade unions are abolished and their leaders arrested. this allowed hitler to destroy a group that would oppose him.
