April 1978 Kabul revolution
New govmt overthrew current govrmnt, determined to build socialism in oil – rich Afghanistan but unstable. By spring 1979 civil war broke out between govmt + Islamic fighters, many muslim leaders angered by socialist reforms.

President Taraki was assassinated by supporters of Amin, head of army, who claimed presidency of the country.

1979 Dec Soviet invasion
Brezhnev ordered soviet invasion of Afghanistan as: Amin not trusted (even tho comm), Afghan would become Islamic state – not comm so no alliance with Russia, Karmal claimed he had enough supp for new gov.

Brezhnev though America would tolerate invasion like the Czechoslovakian uprising to avoid war, so soviet troops killed Amin + many of his supporters, Karmal declared president
Jimmy Carter (Am President) felt he had to react, brought out Carter doctrine- gave Am right to get involved in Middle East if oil reserves threatened.

He put economic sanctions on Russia, they supplied Afghan rebels – Mujahidin, détente brought to an end, SALT 2 negotiations were scrapped.
America boycotted 1980 Olympics along with 60 other countries incl. china & West Germany, created their own Boycott games.

1981 Raegan replaces Carter as president, he believed America had to start fighting again. He proposed Star Wars.

Star wars – nuclear umbrella, army of satellites equipped with lasers which could intercept Soviet missiles
Reagan increased milit spending over a trillion $ between 1981-87, started building ‘stealth bomber’, 6 new trident nuc submarines, developed neutron bomb, put cruise missiles over Europe (inc Brit)

They couldn’t compete, economy couldn’t fund it, also behind in computer technology as they suspicious it could be used to undermine them.
