WW1 markets were no longer needed. Overproducation meant prices for crops were decreasing as more was being produced. New machines contributed to overproduction and also meant fewer jobs. Fewer mouths to feed. Competition with canada.

First with silent movies and the talkies. By 1930 over 100 million people going to the cinema every week. It helped escapism, fashion and behaviuors. However was blamed for a decline in sexual morals.

New music made by blacks. New dances such as the Charleston. Older generations were appalled.

Especially in southern states there was segregation. No vote, worse jobs and housing etc. Lynchings were not rare and they experienced extreme racism.
