What does the term 'Prehistory' mean?
The term 'Prehistory' means 'before writing' which is why the Prehistoric period got its name as it was an age before writing began.

How much did Prehistoric people know about medicine and disease?
We can assume that Prehistoric people did not understand much about medicine as many people died from curable diseases. However, aborigines also came up with some logical cures for physical illnesses.

Did prehistoric people complete minor surgery? Give an example.
Yes, minor surgery was completed. An example of this is trephining, drilling holes in the skull to release evil spirits.

How do we know that holes in the skull were caused by trephining and not injuries?
we know that the holes were made on purpose and not by accident because there was evidence of bone regrowth around the area that the hole was made. Also there were no cracks leading from the holes and they were too neat to be from an injury.

Did any of the patients survive when trephining was completed?
Yes, many patients did. This is proven because there was evidence of bone regrowth on the skulls which means they must have survived long enough for the hole to start healing itself.

What did they base the treatment of illnesses on?
They believed that a spiritual cure would treat diseases. they believed in magic and the Gods thta would cause and cure most diseases. Somephysical treatments were used but it was mainly supernatural cures that Aborigines used.

What sort of things did they do to cure diseases and illnesses?
They used herbal remedies which contained a mixture of herbs and spices. They also wore charms that were said to ward of evil spirits and sung songs and chants to cure an ill person. Furthermore, they also prayed to the Gods for a person to be cured.
