In what condition was German in after WW1?
Millions of people dead or injured. Spent too much money on the war. Everyone wanted Germany to take the blame.

Germany took the blame for WW1. Army reduced to 100,000 and vehicles reduced. Forced to pay reparations. Lost crucial land including industrial and agricultural areas that couldn't be replaced. Military banned from Rhineland.

Difficult to make decisions as many parties in Reichstag - hard to pick a Chancellor with majority. Hated as accepted Treaty of Versailles. Freikorps had to be formed because of trouble.

What problems did Germany face after WW1?
Thousands poor and starving. Many denied Germany lost the war and blamed 'November Criminals'. Government seen as week and ineffective.

Explain the Spartacist Revolt
In 1919, the communists led by Liebknecht and Luxemburg tried to take over Berlin but they were defeated by the Freikorps.

Explain the Kapp Putsch
In 1920, right-wing Freikorps led by Wolfgang Kapp took over Berlin to form another government. The workers staged a general strike - Kapp gave up. The government didn't punish them as judges sympathised with them.

What was the cause of hyperinflation?
France and Beligium (who occupied the Ruhr) took resources which led to fury in Germany. Workers in the Ruhr refused to work leading the German industry to collapse again causing hyperinflation. On top of this Germany couldn't pay reparations.

What were the three major results of hyperinflation?
Wages were paid twice a day. Middle classes lost out as bank savings became worthless. German Mark worthless.

What did Stresemann do to improve the economy?
1923 - workers back to Ruhr. 1924 - Dawes Plan introduced Rentenmark. 1925 - Locarno Treaty to agree on western borders. 1926 - League of Nations. 1928 - Kellogg-Briand Pact settles disputes in peace. 1929 - Young Plan reduces reparations.

What was significant about the Wall Street Crash?
Germany was lending money from the USA at the time. When it happened, USA couldn't lend Germany any more money causing the start of a global depression on top of the reparations.

Berlin centre for culture. Advances in art, architecture, music and literature. Encouraged critical thinking at Frankfurt University.

The Weimar government was weak so Hitler planned to overthrow it. He occupied the beer hall and announced the revolution had begun. He then marched in Munich with SA but was defeated by police and imprisoned.

What tactics did Hitler change after the Munich Putsch?
Nazi party was banned but Hitler re-established it. German economy began to recover under Stresemann so support for Nazis declined. He tried to gain support through the democratic system, expanded his party nationally and set up propaganda.
