Charles Goodnight. Left 180 cattle, but returned in 1865 to fund he owned 5000. He made more money at the market.

Texas fever, Homesteaders fenced thier land, reducing cattlemen's access to water and making cattle drives much harder.

The herds became too big for the grazing areas. Ranchers, like homesteaders, now used barbed wire enclosures. More intensive ranching also favoured smaller scale operations.

They were more reliable, safer and quicker to reload than the "cap and ball" revolvers of the Civil War.
