Emmeline Pankhurst started the women's social and political union with her daughter Christabel. They wanted votes for women.

An imprisoned suffragette went on hunger strike. At first the government ignored this but later they force fed prisoners.

There were attempts in parliament to give votes to women however not everyone agreed

The campaign got more violent. The government announced a cat and mouse act. It let hunger strikers be released so they could get better then they would be put back into prison once they were healthy

Mrs Pankhurst told suffragettes to stop all actions to help with the war

burning political buildings, slashing paintings in art galleries, marches,chaining themselves to buildings.

It gave them more freedom as they could do jobs that only men did before. They proved that they could contribute to their country and got votes for women

Where is Ypres situated?
In Belgium, near the French border. It used to be called Flanders

What happened in the first battle of Ypres?
Took place between 12 October and 11 November 1914. The BEF resisted the Germans at a cost of 50000 men. The Germans lost twice as many. The channel ports were saved for Britain and allies and supplies could be readily transported to France.

What happened in the seond battle of Ypres?
April 1915. Germans set off 168 tons of Chlorine gas whcih killed 5000 allied troops and injured 10,000. Gas attacks were used by both sided however it often back fired and the wind blew it backwards onto the troops.

What happened in the third battle of Ypres?
1917. French and British fought in the most terrible conditions around Ypres and the village of Passchendale. The summer mud was deep and many soldiers drowned. The allies and Canadians captured Passchendale but 5 months after the Germans recaptured.
