Causes of Czechoslovakian crisis
– Repression – secret police who crushed political opposition, economic problems – standard of living declining during 1960s + economy struggling, Dubcek new leader wanted rid of repressive acts of comm “socialism with a human face”

Jan -Dubcek replaced Novotny (unpop comm leader). Czech people introduced to relaxation of press sensorship, legislation of political opposition, and introduced capitalist elements. Lasted 4 months.

1/2 million troops invaded Czechoslovakia in Aug 68 as seemed to be a threat to USSR. People didn’t respond with violence, stood in from of tanks etc, Dubcek arrested forced to sign Moscow protocol – reintroducing censorship, +removal polit opp

USSR had the right to invade any countries in East EU that appeared to threaten the security of the whole eastern block

International reaction
USA and Western EU condemned it but did nothing. Italy + France broke away from Russian influence set up Eurocommunism. Even Eastern EU governments criticized Russia e.g Yogoslavia and Romania.
