Harry Truman replaced Roosevelt. Clement Attlee of Labour party replaced Churchill. This made them all suspicious. Stalin wanted to control Eastern Europe so didnt want elections there. Stalin thought the new leaders were weak and took advantage

New boundaries of Poland were agreed. The allies decided to divide Germany and Berlin between them. The agreed to legal trials at Nuremberg of Nazi leaders for war crimes

USSR - communist. USA - capitalist. Communism meant state control of industy and aggriculture. USA valued private enterprise - the american dream - wealth and success. USA wanted political freedom. USSR - one party state

What was the Arms Race
USA and USSR were competative each wanting to be the strongest. In 1945 USA dropped atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. Japan then surrendered. USA had kept A bomb secret until this but then USSR dropped one in 1949.
