Tribal warfare was part of the culture of many Native Americans. Low intensity earfare and raiding for animals and captives was a part of life and the usual way for men to gain prestige.

Native American beliefs emphasised the interdependance of all things - they saw all things as being connected. For this reason circles were spiritually important to them.

They believed even non-living things in nature like rocks and mountains had spirits. Activities like mining could easily be believed to upset spirits.

Members of Native American tribes who were importat for their connection to the power of the spirits. Medicine men had strength, courage and understanding of both visible and invisible worlds.

Why is so little known of the history of America before the settlers arrived?
The Native Americans did not have writing. Important ideas and histories of the tribes were passed from generation to generation by telling stories. Terrible epidemics killed off many of the old people, and many stories were lost witt them.
