Hispanic American
Defined by the US census as 'Latino' and applying to a person of Mexican, Cuban, Puerto-Rican and other originally Spanish-speaking ethnic groups.

The enforced separation of racial groups.

14th Amendment
Made all people born or naturalised in the USA, including those who had been slaves, US citizens.

NAACP
National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People, established in 1910, organised many of the legal actions against segregation in the USA.

CORE
Congress of Racial Equality, set up in 1942 to campaign for civil rights by non violent means.

Fellowship for Reconicilation
A peace based organisation founded in 1914; many of its members were Quakers.

Ghetto
Part of a town or city where a certain racial group is expected to live, set apart from the rest of the town or city.

Termination
A policy by which Native Americans were freed from federal control and protected (and policed) by US federal and state laws, but tribal lands opened once held in trust for them by the government would now be open for sale.

Bracero Programme
A Mexican immigration programme run by the government from 1942-64. Mexicans signed contracts to work, usually on the land, in the US for a set period of time in return for a guaranteed level of housing and working conditions. (4.6 million contracts)

1953-58, a US government drive to find illegal Mexican immigrants and return them to Mexico.

Proposition 6
A law proposed in California in 1978, to ban gays, lesbians and supporters of their rights from working in state funded schools in California.
