What were 7 problems for living on the Plains?
Scarcity of wood and water, harsh unpredictable weather, lack of food (only real meal would be the buffalo), traveling far for water, mountains, prairie grass, lack of technology.

What is meant by living a nomadic lifestyle?
To constantly be on the move and not settle in one place.

What are the 5 reasons as to why the Indians lived in tipis?
Because the lack of wood was replaced by the buffalo skin (tipi), the conical shape of the tipi resisted strong winds, the white color of the skin reflected the extreme heat, the flaps of the tipi could become wider to allow air in and heat out.

What is exposure?
It is the practice of leaving old people behind whilst moving. The Indians did this and was one reason why the white Americans disliked them.

The chief, the council, medicine man and warrior society.

Who was the chief and what was their role?
They were elected by the people from the band based on spiritual power, medicinal knowledge, wisdom and their hunting skills. They helped made decisions for the band alongside the council, medicine man and warrior society.

They would make decisions for the band with the chief, warrior society and medicine men. They would smoke a ceremonial pipe from buffalo dung believing that it would help them make better decisions. They also took the advice of old people as they

They would supervise the band, hunt and their opinion was important when decisions were being made because they knew a lot about tac-tics to stay safe.

They are responsible for the tipi, preparing food and fetching water.

They are responsible for hunting, looking after the horses and protecting the band.

What was the Sun Dance?
It was a performance to get help or guidance from the spirit world when making an important decision.

It was performed after a victory in battle or war to celebrate their success and thank the spirits for help.

This was performed before a hunt to get the spirit world to bring the buffalo herd closer to the band making it easier for the unters.

Who was the Medicine man and what was his role?
The medicine man was a spiritual doctor who could cure people. He was believed to have healing powers and his opinion was important when making a decision because he was considered spiritual and wise.

Why were the Indians so protective of their land?
Because they believe that the land was their mother so it can't be owned. They believed that when you were born, you were born from the land and when you die, you return to the land.

Why was the circle important to the Indians?
It is because they believed in the circle of life so they would make their tipis face the sun in the morning when they wake up and moved in circle.
