What inequalities existed for women in 1900?
Their main role was to be a wife and mother. Education at school taught them to cook, clean and look after a family. Women were paid less than men. Women could not be lawyers or work in banks. Wife battering a martial **** were still legal.

NUWSS-National Union of Women's suffrage societies. Set up-1987 Leader- Millicent Fawcet.

Who were the Suffragettes?
WSPU-Women's Social and Political Union Set up-1903 Leader- Emmenline Pankhurst and daughters Slyvia and Christabel (only women can join WSPU). (Violence/Window smashing/Vandalism/Imprisonment/Hunger strike).

What had changed for better by 1900?
By 1900 all children went to school. New jobs were appearing like typists and working on telephone switchboards. Universities accepted women. Women were allowed to file a divorce against their husbands for cruelty and desertion.

Asquith becomes Liberal PM. He is against votes for women.

June 1909
Suffragettes start smashing windows.

1909
WSPU members sent to prison and go on hunger strike. Government starts force feeding.

1910
Asquith produced the conciliation Bill that would give women the vote. Then he backtracks and the WSPU get into a fight with police. This is named "Black Friday".

1913
The government introduce the 'Cat and Mouse Act' Women on hunger strike were released from prison when they became ill- only to be re-arrested when they recovered.

June 1913
Emily Davison kills herself by running out in front of the Kings horse at the Derby.

1914
WW1 begins and both the WSPU and NUWSS call off their campaign and help the war effort.
