Who helped the poor in 1900?
Charities and the Poor Law helped the poor in 1900. By 1905 there were 700-800 charities.

What did Booth and Rowntree find?
They both found out that poverty was not people's own fault!

What did Booth find out?
Studied poverty in London. Found that 31% of people lived below the 'poverty line', He worked out that 85% of people were poor because of low wages and unemployment.

What did Rowntree find out?
Studied York. Found that 10% of people live in 'primary poverty'. Main reasons for poverty were large families, low wages and death of wage earner.

Why did poverty become a political issue?
1. The researchers- Booth and Rowntree 2. The Boer War- en were so unhealthy due to poverty they failed the army healthcheck! 3. The Labour party- the Liberals rivals were also promising to help the poor. 4. DLG thought poor people should get help.

How did the liberals help children?
Free school meals 1906, School medical inspection 1907, The Children's Act 1908- parents could be prosecuted for cruelty to children and kids under 14 were not allowed into pubs, School clinics 1912- free medical treatment.

How did the Liberals help workers?
National Insurance Part 1 1911 AGAINST SICKNESS- Workers paid 4d a week if they got ill they were given 10s a week for 13 weeks.

How did the Liberals help workers?
National Insurance Part 1 1912 AGAINST UNEMPLOYMENT-workers paid 2d a week and if they lost their job they got 7s6d a week for up to 15 weeks.

How did the Liberals help the elderly?
Pensions- Paid out of tax. For all over 70. 5 shillings a week. To recieve the pension they must never have been to prison.

Had to earn less than £160 a year.

Who opposed the reforms?
The rich land owners because DLG taxed the rich alot and many people becuase they thought getting help will make the poor people lazy.
