Describe Vietnam before ww2 and during ww2?
before ww2 vietnam was a french colony, but during ww2 japan took over parts of the country and the communist leader Ho Chi Minh lead a resistance movement for Vietnamese independence (1941-45).

Vietnam defeated, vietnamese claimed independence but french troops back in Vietnam refusing to accept their independence. There was a war between Vietminh (communist army) and French.

Who were the NLF? what were it's subdivisions?
NLF was the North Vietnamese army. Subdivisions: Vietcong, army of local people who used guerrilla tactics. Vietminh: original north army formed in 1941 when fighting French and previously Japan, replaced by NLF in 1955.

South vietnamese army

what is guerrilla warfare?
military tactics including ambushes, sabotage, raids and hit and run tactics.

Why did the Americans get involved in the Vietnam war?
they were trying to contain communism, knew china and USSR were sending aid to north so needed to retaliate and help south, domino theory (didn't want communism to spread in asia), Diem was corrupt and unliked so would raise little support in south.

military advisers sent to train AVRN, gave them money and weapons

how did President Johnson escalate the war after 1963?
In aug 1964 North Vietnamese allegedly attacked US ships,giving him an excuse from US army to invade north instead of just giving advice to NVA, 1965 bombed north then in march 3500 marines arrived at Danang.

what were the vietnamase tactics?
guerrilla warfare, supplied weapons from China and Russia, Vietcong used ambushes, planted mines and boobytraps, experts at camouflage, Ho Chi Minh Trail, tunnels.
