Kennedy supplied arms, equipment and transport for over 1400 anti-Castro exiles. Met by 20,000 Cuban troops. All killed or captured within days. Massive failure.

The missile gap!! America had more long range missiles than Russia. America had Polaris missile (launched fro submarine). American plane shot down. USSR tested first atom bomb.

Concerned at the missile gap. Kennedy was seen as weak. Khrushchev was worried about his position as leader. Defend Cuba.

Quarantined Cuba. Called it a quarantine because a 'blockade' is an act of war and would given reason to fire missiles. Ignored advice to attack Cuba. Involved the United Nations.
