Define demonology
An evil spirit can dwell within a person & control his/her mind & body, the belief that odd behaviour was caused by possession led to treating it by exorcism.

What did Hippocrates class mental disorders as?
There were 3 categories: mania, melancholia & phrenitis/brain fever. They believed brain function relied on a balance of fluids in the body, blood (temp), black bile (melancholia), yellow bile (irritability/anxiousness) and phlagm.

Describe the Salem Witch Trials
19 men & women were hung, they may have been under the influence of ergot which is a hallucigenic fungus that grows on cereal crops which can lead to psychotic episodes.

Describe the lunancy trials
Began in 13th century to determine a persons mental health, they were conducted under the Crown's right to protect those with a mental illness, Lunacy comes from a theory which attributed odd behaviour to a misalignment of the moon & stars.

Why was there few spaces for mentally ill people in hospitals?
Because leprosy was a big problem, The Prior of St Mary of Bethlehem founded in 1243 which housed 6 men with mental illnesses in 1403, it was then solely devoted to housing those with a mental illness, it became a tourist attraction for entertainment.

What did Philippe Pinel describe about the conditions in the asylum?
Shackled to walls, chains on their hands & feet, fed a mushy bread soaked in soup, he started treating them as humans

What did Freud believe about mental illnesses?
He believed that they are caused by a disturbed mind

Schizophrenia is the result of an excess of dopamine, depression is a deficit of serotonin.
