Why was the Munich Putsch Important? Nov. 1923
Hitler realised he needed to change his strategy - focus of gaining votes not fighting. Wrote Mein Kampf in which he expressed his views.

Created the SS. Introduced the Hitler Youth. Attacked the Weimar Gov. Increase in popularity but still little votes.

What was the Impact of the Wall Street Crash?
Weimar Gov. seemed to be doing little to help the country - many began to turn to extremist parties. Nazi and communist support rose sharply for the election in 1930.

What was the Coalition of Bruning?
Bruning had to rely on Article 48 and President Hindenburg. As Depression deepened, the government was forced to cut unemployment benefits. Known as the 'Hunger Chancellor'. In May 1932 he resigned. Nazi polled highest ever vote.

In the July election, Hitler should have been chancellor, but, Hindenburg despised him and chose von Papen as his chancellor instead. von Papen forced to call another election as he couldn't keep votes. Hitler denied again.

von schleicher appointed chancellor but couldn't keep a working majority. 1933, von Papen persuaded Hindenburg to appoint Hitler as Chancellor and Papen as vice.Thought he could control Hitler.

What was the Reichstag Fire, 1933?
Hitler persuaded Hindenburg to dissolve the Reichstag and call for a general election, 5 March. Nazi Propaganda helped and the SA harassed left-wing groups. 27 Feb, Reichstag set on fire. Dutch Communist, Marinus Van Der Lubbe was arrested.

What was the Importance of the Reichstag Fire, 1933?
Argued: Comm. planning revolution. Persuaded Hind. to sign 'Decree of Protection..' which gave Hitler power to restrict things. Comm. A coalition was formed as Nazis didnt win overall majority. Hitler could't change the constitution.

What was the Enabling Act, 1933 - 1934?
When discussed, Hitler banned comm. from attending, used SA men. Absentees were counted as present/in favour of bill. Bill was passed as hitler made promises to Catholic Party. Marked end of Weimar Const. 'Found. stone' of 3rd Reich. Dictatorship.

Control of the press, Control of the states, Ban on political parties, Trade unions, Purge of the Civil Service.

What was the Night of the Long Knives, 1934?
SA leader, Ernst Rohm, wanted a social revolution. Hitler saw SA and leader as threat. He needed army support but army wont agree to Roehm's demands. Used SS to kill 400 'enemies of state' inc. Roehm and von Schleicher.

What was the Importance of the Night of the Long Knives, 1934?
Eradicated would-be opponents, secured support of the army, relegated the SA to minor role, provided Himmler with the opportunity to expand the SS.

How did Hitler Become Fuhrer?
On 2 Aug 1934, Pres. Hindenburg died. Hitler combined the post of Pres. and Chanc. to become Fuhrer. Now head of State and Commander in Chief of army. Army made to swear an oath of loyalty. Hitler was now absolute dictator of Germany.
