Hitlers second move- Dollfuss affair
Dollfuss became the Chancellor of Austria, he was a dictator so he outlawed political parties such as the Nazi Party. The party had been founded before Hitler but due to his influence they looked to him for support.

Dollfuss affair#2
Dollfuss was killed by 10 Austria Nazis, Hitler had wanted to invade in support of them but Mussolini had been keen to strengthen his friendship with Austria so he threatened war in the event of a German invasion.

Impact of the Dollfuss affair
After the Austria Nazis were weakened in a civil war Hitler found it convenient to pretend that he hadn't been supporting them- aware he couldn't risk war with Italy. He realized the need to rearm as well as gain Mussolini as an allie

Hitlers third move- The Saar
The Saar had been run by the league. The league let the people vote on if they wanted to return to German rule, 90% of the people voted in favour. This was a moral booster for Hitler

Rearmament and Conscription
After coming into power he drafted a 1000 unemployed workers into the army reducing unemployment but also delivering his promise to make Germany strong again and to challenge the treaty.

He pointed out that no other country has disarmed and made other states as uncomfortable as possible one the issue. He promised not to rearm if in 5 years all other nations destroyed their arms. Britain gave a disarmament plan but but it was rejecte

Secret Rearmament
Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with Poland agreeing to settle disputes without force giving him space to rearm and weakened Poland's and France's alliance. Hitler openly paraded 2,000 aircrafts in Luftwaffe.

He reintroduced conscription which included all able bodied men over 19, army grew from 100,000 to 1 million. The final disarmament of the Leagues Disarmament conference showed no other country wanted to disarm.

The Stresa Front
Italy, Britain and France agreed to uphold their territorial boundaries and to stop Hitler from further undermining the treaty, this move had little impact.

The Anglo-German Naval agreement
Britain signed a naval agreement with Hitler allowing German 35% of the the British Navy, this showed Hitler that Britain would compromise over the treaty.

The remilitarisation of the Rhinelands
France had signed a treaty with the USSR to protect each other against attacks from Germany, Hitler used this as an excuse to claim that Germany was under threat and argued that with such a threat he should be allowed to place troops on his frontier.

Hitler knew that many people in Britain believed he had a right to remilitarise the Rhineland and he was fairly confident Britain would not intervene. He was worried about France so his troops had orders to pull out if France acted against them.

The league was focused on the Abyssinian crisis and could only condemn Hitler for his actions, nothing else. France didn't know how weak German forces were and no one wanted to be responsible for plunging France into war with Elections coming up

The Spanish Civil war
War broke out in Spain between communists who were supported by Republican government and right-winged rebels. Seeing this as an opportunity to fight communism and try out new air forces German aircrafts bombed civilians in various Spanish Cities

Mussolini was also involved in the Civil war allowing him and Hitler see they had a lot in common also with dictatorship in Japan.

Anti-comintern pact
This was signed by Japan, Germany and Italy as a way to limit communist influence around the world, particularly aimed at the USSR. The new alliance was called the Axis alliance.

Germany and Austria
Austrian people were mainly German and Hitler had made it clear that he wanted the states to exist as one German nation. Many in Austria agreed with this as Austria was economically weak and thought joining with Germany would help.

Anschluss
Hitler convinced a strong Nazi party in Austria to stir up trouble for the government, demonstration were staged calling for union with Germany and riots were also caused. Hitler told the Chancellor only Anschluss would solve the problem.

After a lot of pressure he looked to France and Britain for help but was refused, he then asked the people what they wanted. Hitler was not prepared to lose so he sent his troops into Austria claiming it was to prevent trouble.

Under the watch eye of German troops 99.75% of Austrians voted to join Germany. All of Austria's weapons and rich deposits of Gold and iron ore were added to Germany's strong army and industry.

Appeasement
This was the naval agreement with Germany in which Britain followed a policy of giving Hitler what he wanted.

Reasons for appeasement
Hitler was standing up to communism (they were really worried about communism), wanted to prevent another world war, no support from the USA would be given if they stood up to him, the treaty was unfair, wanted to deal with their own economic problem

What was wrong with appeasement?
It encouraged Hitler to be more aggressive, it put to much trust in Hitlers promises, it let Germany grow too strong, it scared the USSR.

The Munich agreement
After Hitler was told his demands were unreasonable another meeting was set up with Mussolinis help. Britain, France,Italy and Germany decided to give Hitler what he wanted. Without the consultation of the Czechs and the USSR Sudetenland was given up

The occupation of Czech
The British did not trust Hitler when he said he had no territorial ambitions Europe. German troops took over the rest of Czech and there was no resistance. Britain and France did nothing but it was made clear that Hitler could not be trusted.

Stalin and Hitler agreed not to attack each other, in private they agreed to divide Poland between themselves

Why did Stalin sign the pact
He was not convinced that Britain and France were strong enough as allies against Hitler. Had designs on large section of eastern Poland and wanted to take the Baltic states. Didn't believe Hitler would keep his word but hoped for time to build foces

Germany invaded Poland and as promised after he invaded Czech Britain and France declared war.
