what were considered characteristics of a witch?
- they were usually female because they were believed to be weaker and more likely to be persuaded to do the devils work. - usually old woman because they were more likely to know the 'old religion.' - women who had long noses, warts and marks

what was a sturdy beggar?
someone who was fit and able to work, but wondered for a living instead.

what was a vagabond?
a person without a settled home or regular work who wonders from place to place and lives by begging.

what was sanctuary?
when someone on the run reached a church they could claim 40 days of sancyuary. they could not physcally be removed from the church. after 40 days they either had to go on trial or leave the country bu running barefoot with a cross to a port.

what was benefit of the clergy?
when an accused person claimed the right to be trialed in the chuch courts- people could read a passage from the bible and get out of tougher punishments.

what were manor courts?
they were like villiage meetings that most people would attend. - local people would decide guilt or innocense and heavy fnes were enforced in you lied in court.

what were church courts?
if you were trialed by the church you wouldn't be sentenced to death. they were more lenient.

- middle ages AD 1000-1500 -early modern AD 1500-1700 -industrial period AD 1700-1900 -twentith century AD 1900-2000

what was trial by battle?
a type of trial by ordeal. guilt was determind if the accused is defeated in combat.

what were fines paid to the king?
the system of raising money for the royal and governmental expenses. instead of the wergild they paid money to the king.

what were royal courts?
they were a group of people called a jury and judge who dealt with serious crimes.

what was the coroner?
an officier responsible for investigating violent or supicious deaths.

what was the sheriff and posse?
the sheriff had many duties. they had to discover criminals and deliver them to the royal courts. the posse was used to catch criminal as they were able-bodied men of the county.

within a villiage one of the civilians volunteers to be constables who acted as police.

few offences carried to the death penalty. criminals paidcompensation to their victims or the victims family.

what was trial by ordeal?
local juries decided guilt or innocense. if they couldn't decide they asked god.

a trial decided by jury so that multiple people would give their opinion and there would be a fair outcome.

witnesses of crimes would shout and make others aware of the criminal the villiagers would then help to catch the criminal.

a group of 10 men over the age of 12 and if one broke the law the others had to bring him to justice.

because of tchnology, transport, rise in population and media.
