Types of blood cells
erythrocytes: Red Blood cells Leacocytes: White blood cells, Thrombocytes platelets
8 of 17
Platelets
Very small non-nucleated discs-2-4 microns in diameter formed from megakaryocytes in red bone marrow. Functional in blood clotting. Life span-8-11 days.
9 of 17
Erythrocytes
Biconcave, non-nucleated discs(7 microns in diamter) containing the iron based blood pigment haemoglobin. Shape is closely related to function. Formed by haemopoiesis in the red marrow. Life spand 120 days in primates. Transport of oxygen from lungs
10 of 17
Leucocytes-White blood cells
Leucocytes are the largest blood cells, 1% of blood volume, defend body against microbes, contain nuclei, granules in cytoplasm.
11 of 17
Leucocytes
Granulocytes- contain multi-obed nuclei and granules in cytoplasm, formed by granulopoiesis, named according to dyes
12 of 17
Granulocytes- Three main types
Eosinophils, Basophils, Neutrophils
13 of 17
Eosinophils
Stain with red acid stain eosin
14 of 17
Basophils
Stain with alkaline methylene blue
15 of 17
Neutrophils
- Stain purple sine they stain with eosin and methylene blue
16 of 17
Agranulocytes
Contain large nucleus, no granules, 25-50% of all leucocytes, two main types of Agranulocyte
