What was so special about and who came up with the theory of the four humours?
It was the first natural theory and Hippocrates came up with it.

Liquids in the body, black bile, yellow bile, blood and phlegm.

What was the theory?
For the body to be in perfect health all four humours must be balanced.

How did the humours relate to the seasons and elements?
Blood warm and wet spring air, yellow bile dry and hot summer fire, black bile cold and dry autumn earth, phlegm cold and wet winter water

How did the treatments work?
By removing or (less commonly) adding in one of the four humours into the body to balance them.

Bleeding, purging (sneezing was a sign of too much phlegm in winter)

What did the theory of the opposites mean?
If you were too hot, you had too much of a warm humour so something cold was given. Vice verse so if too cold chili was given.

What else did Hippocrates come up with?
The Hippocratic oath: confidentiality and a promise to always do the best for the patient.

What were the positives of the four humours?
Moving away from supernatural, observation required, people were healthier, lasted 1000 years

What were the negatives of the four humours?
It was incorrect, still believed in gods, lasted 1000 years, no new theories for 1500 years.
