Arthur Rivier
strong, well reserved man. But later we find him drunk in a back strre, which reveals that he isn't coping with the memories of a horrific war. ' we aren't heroes, we were only there. The real heroes are those that went and didn't talk about it'

He lost his arm and legs in the war. He is an inspiration to all, especailly Francis because he is not cynical. He keeps a positive attitude about the future. Is he the one who deserves the 'hero' status in the book?
