Why did Henry VII need nobility?
Yes, needed their experience to help him rule. Yes, needed them to fill offices and enforce royal will in localities

Why was it hard for Henry VII to gain the loyalty of nobility?
Many liked and were loyal to Richard III who rewarded them with land, Henry not liked so much

Were the nobility a threat to Henry VII?
Yes: Henry was a usurper, England was vulnerable and weakness had been caused by previous nobles exploiting weak kings. Nobles had lots of land, retained troops. Land+power.

Limited the number of nobles he created, used inducements and sanctions, gave nobles a chance to prove their loyalty

Methods used to get the nobles on side. Order of Garter, Patronage, King's and Great council.

Created 37 knights of garter, prestige not power

given for good service, given to men loyal before and during Bosworth, desirable

Membership a sign of the king's trust

What were sanctions?
Methods used to forcibly control nobles. Acts of Attainder, Bonds and Recognisances, Limiting Retainers, Feudal Rights, regaining former crown land.

What were acts of attainder?
Families lost the right to own land, 9 passed, 5 reversed, 4 with conditions attached. Encouraged good behaviour, increased loyalty to Henry

What were bonds and recognisances?
written agreements to pay for offences and be paid for good behaviour. £10,000 fines. 36/62 nobles families tied to one

What was limiting retainers?
Nobles who kept troops on their land was a threat to Henry's position. Made nobles swear not to illegally retain. 1504 proclamations, nobles needed retaining licenses £5/month/troops. Burgavenny fined £70,000 in 1506

What were feudal rights?
Wardship: royalty could exploit land owned by minors. Reliefs: King was paid when land was inherited. Livery: Payment to recover land from Wardship

What was regaining former crown land?
1486 Act of Resumption, recovered land granted away before War of Roses. Henry kept land by rewarding land gained from act of attainder. Henry had 5x more land by the end of his reign
