His father had been very greedy and repressive. Henry wanted to make the country wealthy (and prosper), and most of all be a fair ruler.

London had a population of 60,000 - it was the largest, and most important.,

Most of England's population was rural - they probably lived and worked on their farms (or, additionally, with animals, which they owned).

Why did Henry wanted to split from the Catholic Church?
He formed his own church in 1534, called the Church of England. This was because he wanted to divorce his first (of 6) wife, Catherine of Aragon.

Why did the King want to divorce his 1st wife?
Catherine of Aragon (who had originally been Arthur's wife) could not give him any boys, as heir.

When did Catherine marry Henry?
They got married in June 1509. Both were Roman Catholics, and the punishment for being proved guilty of heresy (non-belief) was death.

When was Catherine of Aragon told the news that may have sealed her fate?
Physicians had told Henry and Catherine that she would not be able to bear any more children in 1524/25.

What was Henry's attitude to being King?
He was a strong believer in the Divine Right of Kings. This described that the King had been chosen by God, himself, to be King.

How might the Divine Right of Kings affected Henry's mentality/action?
He proved to be very lazy, and not a fan of routine tasks. He was the brains behind new innovations, not the paperwork filler. He usually had a right-hand man (e.g. Thomas Cromwell, Thomas Wolsey) to manage these tasks, (& public appearances too).
