Hedonic Calculus
7 elements Bentham believed should be taken into account when calculating the amount of happiness achieved by an action. Happiness, for Bentham, was pleasure minus pain. The greatest amount of pleasure for the least amount of pain.

Stronger pleasures are better. A potent rush of pleasure bringing instant happiness in ideal.

Longer-lasting pleasure is better. Enduring pleasure in of better quality.

Certainty
Actions that are more likely to result in pleasure are greater.

Extent
The more people who experience the pleasure, the better.

Propinquity
The nearer the pleasure is to you, the better.

Fecundity
Pleasure is better and creates more happiness if it is likely to be repeated.
7 of 8
Purity
The less pain created, the better. Some actions may not be pure happiness but are greater if the amount of pleasure is greater.
