Health and Disease - Immunity and Immune system

Will be useful for students studying a health or disease module, focussing on the immune system and immunity.

?
What is the definition of Immunity?
The ability of the body to fight infection and/or foreign invaders by producing antibodies and killing infected cells
1 of 17
What are the 3 types of Leukocytes?
Polymorphonuclear granulocytes, Monocytes, Lymphocytes
2 of 17
What is the definition of Vaccination?
The introduction of microorganisms that have previously been treated to make them harmless for the purpose of inducing the development of immunity
3 of 17
What is the function of the immune system?
Responsible for maintaining homeostasis by recognizing harmful and non harmful organisms and producing an appropriate response
4 of 17
Where are white blood cells matured?
Lymph nodes
5 of 17
What processes are involved in the Non-specific Immune response?
Phagocytosis and inflammation
6 of 17
What is specific Immune response ?
Response to a specific pathogen or antigen and involves the creation of specific antibodies
7 of 17
What is cellular Immunity?
Carried out by T cells, infected cells are killed by cytotoxic T cells
8 of 17
What is Humoral Immunity?
B cells and antibodies are produced and put into the blood stream
9 of 17
What is active immunity?
The body is actively producing antibodies to fight infection
10 of 17
What is passive Immunity?
Antibodies are given to a person from the blood of another person or animal
11 of 17
What affects the 'virulence' of a pathogen
the structure of the invader, length of exposure and the individual's health
12 of 17
What is an antibiotic?
A substance produced by or derived from certain fungi, bacteria and other organisms, that inhibit the growth of other micro organisms.
13 of 17
What is the most resistant micro organism?
Endospores and protozoal cysts
14 of 17
Which are the least resistant?
Vegetative Bacteria
15 of 17
What is an exotoxin?
It is released by bacteria into the environment as a result of their own metabolism
