2 of 19
Parasite
An organism that lives in or on another living thing, causing harm to its host.
3 of 19
Pathogen
An organism that causes disease.
4 of 19
Transmission
The way in which a parasitic travels from one host to another.
5 of 19
Primary defences
Are those that attempt to prevent pathogens from entering the body.
6 of 19
Immune response
The specific response to a pathogen, which involves the action of lymphocytes and the production of antibodies.
7 of 19
Antigens
Protein molecules that can identify and neutralise antigens.
8 of 19
Specificity
An antibody is specific to a particular antigen because of the shape of the variable region. Each type of antibody has a differently shaped variable region.
9 of 19
Cell signalling
The communication between cells that allows effective coordination of a response.
10 of 19
Memory cells
Cells that circulate in the blood after an immune response. They speed up the response to a subsequent attack by the same pathogen.
11 of 19
Lymphocytes
White blood cells that circulate around the body in the blood and lymph. B cells mature in bonw marrow, whilst T cells originate in the bone marrow but mature in the thymus gland.
12 of 19
Vaccination
A deliberate exposure to antigenic material, which activates the immune system to make an immune response and provide immunity.
13 of 19
Atherosclerosis
The depostition of fatty substances in the walls of the arteries.
14 of 19
Cardiovascular disease
A disease of the heart or circulatory system.
15 of 19

Stroke
The death of part of the brain due to a lack of blood flow to that part of the brain and subsequent oxygen deficiency.
17 of 19
Risk factor
A factor that increases the chance or risk that a person will develop a disease
18 of 19
Epidermology
The study of the distribution of a disease in populations, and the factors that influence its spread.
