The absence of disease. It is a positive concept that suggests well-being as opposed to illness or disease and can be influenced by lifestyle factors. There is more than one dimension - physical, social, emotional, mental, spiritual and environmental

Ill health
A state in which a individual is unable to function normally and without pain or other symptoms and can be regarded as the opposite of health. It can be physical or mental and short term or long term.

A diagnostic label given to a set of signs or symptoms. It is a condition or process which can affect the functioining of the body physically or mentally e.g. CHD or Alzheimers. It is long term and can be communicable or non-communicable.

Refers to an illness which has come about as a direct result of long term stress. Symptoms may include fatigue, headaches, digestive/stomach problems, anxiety/depression, tearfulness, palpitations and lowered immune system.

Emotional well-being. It is the absence of mental illness. It is the belief of ones self-worth e.g. feeling good and able to cope. Also to be able to face challenges and responsibility.

It may be short or long term and many are treatable. It affects the psychological, emotional and cognitive well-being of an individual e.g. psychotic - depression or schizophrenia or neurotic - OCD or phobias.
