Schizophrenia
Is a long-term mental health condition where a person may not be able to distinguish their own thoughts & ideas from reality. This causes a range of psychological symptoms including; hallucinations, delusions, muddled thoughts & changes in behaviour.

Testicular Cancer
Is cancer that develops in the testicles, a part of the male reproductive system. It is one of the less common cancers but tends to affect men between 15 and 49.

Bowel Cancer
Is cancer that develops in the large bowel. Depending on where the cancer starts, bowel cancer is sometimes referred to as colon or rectal cancer. It is one of the most common types of cancer and most people diagnosed with it are 60+.

Breast Cancer
Is cancer that develops in the breasts from the breast cells. It is the most common type of cancer in the UK, most women diagnosed with it are 50+, but younger women and men can also be diagnosed with it.

Leukaemia
Is cancer of the white blood cells which contribute to the body's defence system. It can be chronic or acute.

Chronic Leukaemia - Progresses Over Many Years
The cancer begins in the stem cells & causes them to produce more of a particular type of white blood cell at the expense of normal bone marrow cells = No red blood cells or platelets.

Acute Leukaemia - Progresses Rapidly & Aggressively
The bone marrow & then begins to release a large number of immature white blood cells that are affected by cancer. The immature white blood cells begin to rapidly disrupt the normal balance of cells in the blood = No red blood cells or platelets.

Obesity
Is a term used to describe somebody who is very overweight with a high degree of body fat & a BMI over 30.

Asthma
Is caused by inflammation of the airways. The muscles around the walls of the bronchi tighten so that the airways become narrower & the lining becomes influenced and start to swell, this makes it difficult to breath.

Stroke
It occurs when the blood supply to the part of the brain is cut off and brain cells are damaged or die. For your brain to function, it needs a constant blood supply, which provides vital nutrients and oxygen to the brain cells.

Diabetes
Is an auto-immune condition that is lifelong causing a person's blood sugar level to become too high. It is also known as diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 Diabetes
Is an insulin dependent diabetes. The pancreas does not produce any insulin so insulin injections are needed for life. It is important to ensure that the blood glucose levels stay balanced by eating healthy, exercising and having regular blood tests.

Type 2 Diabetes
Is when the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to it. This is known as insulin resusance.

Coronary Heart Disease
Is when the heart's blood supply is blocked or interrupted by a build-up of fatty substances in the coronary arteries. This process is known as atherosclerosis & fatty deposits are called atheroma. Leading to chest pains (angina) or a heart attack.

Cardiac Arrest
Is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. The most common cause is a life threatening abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular. This occurs when the electrical activity of the heart become so chaotic, stops pumping and 'fibrillates'.

Chlamydia
Is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is caused by bacteria called Chlamydia Trachomatis. This means you can get it through having unprotected sex with someone who has chlamydia.

Gonorrhoea
Is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is caused by the Neisseria Gonorrhoeae bacteria. This is found in the discharge from the penis or vaginal fluid and is easily passed on during sexual contact and unprotected sex.

Herpes
Is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is cause by the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). It causes painful blisters on the genitals and the surrounding areas & is a chronic long-term condition with no cure.

Anorexia Nervosa
Is a mental health condition that can be life threatening. People with anorexia try to keep their weight as low as possible, usually by restricting the amount of food they eat. They often have a distorted image of being fat when they're not.

Bulimia Nervosa
Is a mental health condition characterized by a distorted body image and an obsessive desire to lose weight, in which bouts of extreme overeating are followed by fasting or self-induced vomiting or purging.
