Give an overview of the nervous system
An older persons sense depend on nervous system health, as we age brain function starts to decline as cells are not replaced and the blood supply to brain is not as good.

What causes degeneration of nervous tissue
Impulses from nervous system slows and cell repair process is slower making older people mor vulnerable to illness. Decrease sensation, slower reflexes and a tendency to be clumsy can be a result.

What is a cataract, how is it diagnosed, what is the treatment?
Changes in lens of eye causes it to become less transparent leading to cloudy vision, retinal exam- eye dialated use slit lamp to look for cataract, surgery- use artificial lens.

Affects blood vessels in light sensitive tissue called retina which lines back of the eye, dialated eye exam, laser treatment to treat growth of new blood blood cells.

Usually occurs when fluid builds up in front of eye causing pressure and damaging optic nerve, usually picked up in routine eye checks, eye drops, laser surgery, pills.

Require less foods for energy and more macronutrient. The bodies repair system slows down so extra protein is needed and vitamin D & calcium for bones. Nutrients absorption lessens,30% of older people have iron deficency.

What happens to our peristalsis as we age?
Food moves through digestive system through muscle contractions, as we age this slows, cause food to move slowly through colon. When it slows down more water is absorbed than food waste, causing constipation.

What are the possible impacts of long term smoking?
Contributes to many common disorders of digestive system, such as heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease. It increases risk of Crohn’s disease and gallstones.
