Whats is a disaster?
When a hazard seriously effects humans
1 of 16
Risk
The likelihood that humans will be affected by an event.
2 of 16
Vulnerability
How susceptible a population is to the damage caused by a hazard
3 of 16
How can the vulnerability of a population be increased?
With a higher population density. In areas of extreme poverty. When the population are unaware or uneducated about the hazard.
4 of 16
What is capacity to cope?
The ability to deal with the consequences of a hazard.
5 of 16
Why are the number of disasters increasing ?
Rapid population growth. Increasing world poverty. Exploitation of resources e.g. Deforestation
6 of 16
Is magnitude parallel to the amount of people affected?
No, It depends on the populations' capacity to cope and their overall vulnerability.
7 of 16
The number of hydro meteorological hazards is increasing. Why?
Global warming & El Niño
8 of 16
Why are deaths after hazard events decreasing?
Prediction, Prevention & Preparedness
9 of 16
Why is the economic cost of a hazard events increasing?
Actual financial cost. Relative financial cost. As people are wealthier and the amount of worldly goods increases so does the price of a hazard.
10 of 16
What is the disaster risk equation.
Risk= Hazards (H) X Vulnerability / Capacity to cope.
11 of 16
How does population density affect any of this?
The higher the population density the more people are going to be affected by an event. In some cases it can increase the risk of an event like a landslide is more likely if overcrowding forces people to live on the side of a hill.
12 of 16
Does the effectiveness of the government affect any of this?
If the government don't educate and make their population aware to the hazards they are lowering their capacity to cope and increasing their vulnerability.
13 of 16
Does the type of event effect the amount of people affected?
Not necessarily, but a flood or drought is likely to affect a larger amount of people for a longer amount of time.
14 of 16
Name three hydro-meteorological hazards.
Landslide, Flood, Drought
15 of 16
Name three geophysical hazards.
Volcanic eruption, Earthquake, Landslide.
