What is a Hazard?
Anything that has the potential to cause harm or damage
1 of 25
What is the risk associated with that hazard?
It is the probability of someone (or something) being harmed if they are exposed to the hazard
2 of 25
Why do some chemical containers have symbols on them?
To tell you what the dangers are with the chemicals
3 of 25
Why do you need to understand what these symbols mean?
So that you can use the suitable safe-working procedures in the lab
4 of 25
What is the name of the hazard with the symbol of a circle with a flame-like shape coming from the top?
Oxidising
5 of 25
What is the risk of oxidising chemicals?
It could provide oxygen which allows other materials to burn more fiercely
6 of 25
Give an example of an oxidising chemical?
Liquid oxygen
7 of 25
What is the name of the hazard with an ! as the symbol?
Harmful
8 of 25
What is the risk of harmful chemicals?
It can cause irritation, reddening or blistering of the skin
9 of 25
Give an example of a harmful chemical
Bleach
10 of 25
What is the name of the hazard with a symbol of a dead tree and a dead fish?
Environmental hazard
11 of 25
What is the risk of chemicals that are environmental hazards?
They are harmful to organisms and to the environment
12 of 25
Give an example of an environmental hazard
Mercury
13 of 25
What is the name of the hazard with a symbol of a fire above a line?
Highly flammable
14 of 25
What is the risk with something that is highly flammable?
It catches fire easily
15 of 25
Give an example of something that is highly flammable
Petrol
16 of 25
What is the name of the hazard which has a symbol of a skull and cross bones?
Toxic
17 of 25
What is the risk of something toxic?
It can cause death by e.g, swallowing, breathing in, absorption through skin
18 of 25
Give an example of something toxic
Hydrogen cyanide
19 of 25
What is the name of the hazard which has the symbol of something poured from a test tube onto a block and a hand both having squiggles coming from it in a v shape?
Corrosive
20 of 25
What is the risk of something corrosive?
It destroys materials material, including living tissues (e.g. eyes and skin)
21 of 25
What do you need to do when planning an experiment?
Identify all the hazards and what the risk is from each hazard
22 of 25
When planning an experiment, what do you need to do concerning risks?
Work out how likely it is that something could go wrong, and how serious it would be if it did. Then, you need to think of ways to reduce the risks.
23 of 25
What is this procedure called?
A risk assessment
24 of 25
Chemical A is corrosive, Chemical B is highly flammable. Suggest appropriate safety precautions
A:Wear gloves, lab coat and goggles. Also keep chemical A at low concentrations. B:Keep away from naked flames
