What are the four methods of managing risks? (PPPM)
1. Protection 2. Planning 3. Prediction 4. Monitoring
2 of 9
How does protection manage a risk of an EARTHQUAKE?
Constructing buildings so they are safe to live in and won't collapse.
3 of 9
What sort of features do earthquake protected houses have?
Rubber shock absorbers, to absorb Earth tremors. Steel frames so they can sway during Earth movements. Open areas around the building so people can assemble during evacuation.
4 of 9
How can planning help manage the risk of an EARTHQUAKE?
Communities can have earthquake drills so they are familiar with the procedure in case it does happen.
5 of 9
How can prediction help manage the risk of an EARTHQUAKE?
By using a seismometer you can monitor the Earths tremors. But Earthquakes are very hard to predict.
6 of 9
How can planning help to manage the risk of a VOLCANO?
An evacuation plan can be put into place. Emergency services can prepare shelter, food supplies and medical help.
7 of 9
How can prediction help manage the risk of a VOLCANO?
A volcano can be predicted by: a satellite, which monitors for the change in the volcanos surface. Thermal heat sensors to detect the change in the volcanoes surface. Gas-tapping bottles which measure the amount of radon and sulphur dioxide.
8 of 9
How can prediction help manage age risk of a VOLCANO?
Buildings cannot be designed to with stand the extreme temperatures of the lava flow. Therefore people just need to evacuate their houses.
