'Bloody Sunday' in N.Ireland (1972) where British paratroopers killed 13 civilians. Number of strikes inc the miners strike in 1972, the NUM strike in 1973 and a national strike in 1974.

The Miners strike which lasted for 6 weeks and saw the introduction of the 3 day week where the electricity was only on for 3 days.

The narrowness of the majority in the commons, as they had only won with a majority of 3. Trade Union struggles. Economic effects of oil price rise including the balance of payments deficit rising to £1 billion and interest rates up 15%.

Many in Labour were still anti-Europe, so he wanted to narrow party divisions.

17 millioned voted yes. People saw the economic problems as proof that Britain should be in the EEC.

Health & Safety Act 1974 - kept the unions onside. North Sea Oils increased making the UK more self sufficient.
