?
In relation to computer architecture, what are buses?
Communication systems that transfer data between components inside a computer.

Describe the function of Program counter in the fetch-execute cycle.
This is a register in the CPU which contains the memory address of the next instruction to be processed.
2 of 14
Describe the function of The address bus in the fetch-execute cycle.
The memory address of the instruction to be fetched is transmitted from the program counter to the RAM through the address bus.
3 of 14
Describe the function of The data bus in the fetch-execute cycle.
The data is transmitted from RAM back to the instruction register in the CPU through the data bus.
4 of 14
Describe the function of The decoder in the fetch-execute cycle.
The decoder in the control unit works out what the instruction means – what has to be done to the data.
5 of 14
Describe the function of The Arithmetic and Logic unit in the fetch-execute cycle.
The control unit instructs the ALU to carry out or execute the instruction.

What is a cache and why is it used?
A cache is a short-term storage area. It is used so that data can be accessed quicker, this will make the computer work faster.
7 of 14
Explain what is meant by a disk cache.
A mechanism for improving the time it takes to read from or write to a hard dis drive.
8 of 14
Explain what is meant by a memory cache.
A part of RAM memory that is set aside as a specialized cache or buffer that is continually updated.

What is a web cache?
It is a folder full of web pages in the user’s computer that is maintained by the Web browser for a period of time.

What is the difference between a multi processor system and a multi core system?
A multi processor system has several microprocessors each with a single CPU and a multi core system has a single microprocessor with several CPUs.

What are the features of magnetic storage devices?
Cheap, A lot of space, but... Very slow to write and read from, and is not portable.
12 of 14
What are the features of solid state storage devices?
Portable, Long lasting, Light/Small to hold but... Expensive, Vulnerable to abrupt power loss.

What are the features of optical storage devices?
Portable, Fast, Cheap But... Have little storage, Can only be read in certain formats.
