Oratorio. Written in 1741 over 24 days. First performed in Dublin in 1742. 1st chorus of the 4th movement. Scored for 4-part SATB.

Structure
Ritornello starts. Based on different combinations of four motifs. 'And the glory of the Lord': First introduced by altos, 'Shall be revealed'. Orchestral link (ritornello) Motifs introduced and combined.

Alternation of homophonic and contrapuntal sections. Few short monophonic sections. Counterpoint is frequently imitative. Instrumental doubling of voices.

Intruments
Very small orchestra and choir originally. Has strings and keyboard (chamber organ). Basso continuo ('cello, double bass, keyboard). Strings mainly double voices. Independant parts for strings (ritornello): still based on vocal materia.

Tonality
Major keys throughout: A, E, A, E, B, E, A. Modulations are to the dominants. Music goes to sharper keys: keeping in joyful mood of piece. Keys confirmed by functional harmony, perfect cadences and pedals.

Harmony
Diatonic. Functional harmony. Most cadences are perfect, occasional imperfect ones. Last cadence is plagal. Tonic and dominant pedals. Mainly primary triads, root and 1st inversion chords. Often V7.

4 melodic motifs, each relate to separate line of text: all contrast. 1) Begins triadically, scalic movement. 2) descending sequence. Mellismatic. 3) Repetition. 4) Only 2 notes. Pedal.

Very little, either loud or soft (terraced dynamics)

Allegro, but very end is Adagio. Triple simple metre (3/4): dance-like feel. Hemiola. Crotchet syncopation. Variety of note values. Occasional use of dotted rhythms.

Sometimes syllabic and other times melismatic. 4) long notes. Word-painting: "together". Different phrases of text are repeated many times (words are as clear as possible).
