Why is fluroine able to displace all other halides from a solution of a halide compound?
It is the strongest oxidising agent.
1 of 18
Does the reducing ability of the halides increase or decrease going down the group?
Increases.
2 of 18
What is a reducing agent?
They cause a reduction to occur; cause another atom to gain electrons. A reducing agent therefore loses electrons and becomes oxidised. They donate electrons.
3 of 18
Why does the reducing ability of the halides increase down the group? (iodine)
The electron lost comes from an energy level furthest from it's nucleus; the electron has a weaker attraction to the nucleus; Experiences more shielding from inner electrons and effect from nuclear charge is reduced.

Why are solid fluorides not used in reactions in the lab?
HF is highly dangerous, forming corrosive and penetrating hydrofluoric acid in contact with moisture.
5 of 18
What is the equation of fluroide with concentrated sulphuric acid?
NaF + H SO --> NaHSO + HF
6 of 18
What are the observations of fluoride with conc sulphuric acid?
Misty fumes (HF); heat released; gas produced; solid disappears; pungent smell

What is HSO ?
The hydrogensulfate ion.
8 of 18
What are the equations of bromide with conc sulfuric acid?
(a) NaBr + H SO --> NaHSO + HBr (b) 2HBr + H SO --> Br + SO + 2H O
9 of 18
Why is there only one equation for fluoride and chloride with conc sulphuric acid?
The hydrogen halides have no reducing ability.
10 of 18
What is reduced in the reaction between bromide and conc sulphuric acid?
H SO to SO

What is oxidised in the reaction between bromide and conc sulphuric acid?
Bromide to Br

What are the equations in the reaction between iodide and conc sulfuric acid?
(a) NaI + H SO --> NaHSO + HI (b) 2HI + H SO --> SO + I + 2H O (c) 6HI + H SO --> S + 3I + 4H O (d) 8HI + H SO --> H S + 4I + 4H O

What is the reduced in the reaction between Iodide and conc sulfuric acid?
H SO to SO , S and H S
15 of 18
What is the oxidised in the reaction between Iodide and conc sulfuric acid?
Iodide to I
16 of 18
What are the observations in the reaction between iodide and conc sulfuric acid?
Misty fumes (HI); heat released; gas produced; solid disappears; purple vapour and grey-black solid (I ); pungent smell (HI/SO /I ); rotten eggs smell (H S); yellow solid (S)
