What were the aims of G+B's research?
To examine the relationship between type of offence and attributions offenders make about their criminal act and cross-validate earlier findings on an English sample.

To use the Gudjohnsson and Singh 42 item blame attribution inventory to measure the offender's type of offence and attribution of blame on 3 dimensions.

Internal/external mental and guilt.

Who were the participants in this study?
80 criminals who were serving sentences in Northern Ireland. Divided into groups.

Describe the 1st group in G+B's study
20 subjects who committed violent offences including homicide and grevious bodily harm. Mean age of 29.

Who were the 2nd group in G+B's research?
40 sex offenders including rapists, paedophiles and sexual assault offences. Mean ages 41 for paedophiles, 28 for others.

Who made up the 3rd of participants in this research?
20 subjects who committed property offences including theft and burglary. Mean age of 28.

Who showed the most remorse?
Those who had committed sexual offences showed most remorse about their behaviour followed my violent offenders.

Little difference found between all offenders in mental element.

Highest scores for violent and lowest for sexual offenders.

What were the differences between violent Irish prisoners and English?
Irish showed lower mental element, lower guilt and higher external attribution scores.

Strong consistency with earlier findings across the offender's group, suggesting strong consistency in way offenders attribute blame.

Where was the only real difference found?
In violent prisoners which may be a result of violence prevalent in Northern Ireland at time of troubles.
