Why are stem cells useful?
Stem cells are unspecialised cells, which have the same simple structure. They are found in embryos, as none of the cells have specialised yet. Scientists develop them to become specialised, to replace cells that were damaged by medical conditions.

What is the structure of bacteria like?
They have no mitochondria, chloroplasts or 'true' nucleus; instead their circular strand DNA is found in the cytoplasm. They are much smaller and simpler organisms because they are unicellular.

Why is measuring dry mass an accurate method of measuring growth?
Dry mass is measured on organisms that are dead, as they have no water in their bodies (water affects mass). It can be done on all organisms, though only once they are dead.

How do plants grow?
Plants continue to grow their whole lives. Cell division occurs in the meristems, found in the tips of shoots and roots. Plants increase in height because their cells become larger and retain the ability to differentiate, unlike animal cells.

What are the features of plant cells?
They have a cellulose cell wall for support and most have chloroplasts to allow them to photosynthesise; animal cells do not have these structures. They also have a large vacuole filled with cell sap, though animal cells only have a small vacuole.
