Describe the job of chloroplasts
absorb light energy for the photosynthesis
1 of 16
Describe the job of the vacuole
contains cell sap and provides support
2 of 16
Describe the function of the cell wall
contains cellulose to provide support
3 of 16
Give 3 ways we can measure growth
length/height, wet mass and dry mass
4 of 16
What is cell differentiation?
When a cell changes to become specialised
5 of 16
Explain the difference between animal and plant growth
Animals tend to grow to a certain size and then stop (grow in early stages to a FINITE SIZE) Plants can grow CONTINUOUSLY- when plants grow, cell division takes place in meristems at the roots and tips- cell enlargement is the main method for plants
6 of 16
True or False: Animal cells lose their ability to differentiate at an early stages, whereas plants retain the ability cell differentiate or specialise
TRUE
7 of 16
What are the two phases of rapid growth for humans?
Just after birth and adolescence
8 of 16
Describe the three sections to the growth curve
1.) slow growth 2.) exponential (rapid) growth 3.) growth levels off (zero growth rate)
9 of 16
What are stem cells obtained from and what could they potentially be used for?
obtained from embryonic tissue and could be used to treat medical condtions
10 of 16
Explain the difference between embryonic and adult stem cells
embryonic stem cells have the ability to specialise into most cells of the body whereas, adult stem cells are only able to differentiate into a few different types of cells
11 of 16
Explain the differences between plant, animal and bacterial cells
Bacterial cells are smaller and simpler; they lack a true nucleus, mitochondria and chloroplasts. A plant cell has a cellulose cell wall for support but an animal cell DOESN'T; plant cells have chloroplasts for photosynthesis but animal cells DO NOT
12 of 16
Explain the difference between DNA in a bacterial cell and a plant/animal cell
Plant and animals keep their DNA inside the nucleus- Bacteria cells have it floating as single circular strand in the cytoplasm
13 of 16
Why does the growth of different parts of an organism differ from the growth rate of the whole organsim?
When a human foetus grows in the uterus the head grows faster than the rest of the body; this enables the brain to develop quickly so that it can coordinate the complex human structure and chemical activity
14 of 16
Give an advantage/disadvantage of the method of wet mass and the same for dry mass
wet mass: live organism can be measured, water content can change; Dry mass: most accurate method; destructive as the removal of water kills an organism
15 of 16
Exactly what is a stem cell?
undifferentiated animal cell which can specialise and develop into different types of cells, tissues and organs
