State the solubility trend for Group 2 hydroxides
Solubility increases down group 2. (BaSH - barium soluble hydroxide)
1 of 9
State the solubility trend for Group 2 sulphates
Solubility decreases down group 2. (MgSS - magnesium soluble sulphates)
2 of 9
State and Explain the trend in melting/boiling points for Group 2
Melting/Boiling point decreases down group 2. This is because there is a weaker nuclear attraction between the positive metal ions (cations) and delocalised electrons.
3 of 9
State the trend in atomic radius for Group 2
Atomic radius increases down group 2. This is because as you go down you get another layer of electrons and more shielding meaning a weaker nuclear attraction, so the atom is held less closely together
4 of 9
State the trend in 1st Ionisation Energy for Group 2
Ionisation energy increases down Group 2. This is because you get an extray layer of electrons and more shielding so there is a weaker nuclear attraction, meaning the outermost electron is more easily lost
5 of 9
State the trend of Group 2 reactivity with water
Reactivity with water increases down group 2. This is because of the extra layer of electrons, more shielding, resulting is a weaker nuclear attraction, meaning the outermost electron is more easily lost and a reaction occurs more easily.
6 of 9
Write an equation for the reaction between Magnesium and Water and Barium Water. REMEMBER STATE SYMBOLS.
Mg(s) + 2H2O(g) ---> Mg(OH)2 + H2(g) / Ba(s) + 2H2O(l) ---> Ba(OH)2(aq) + H2(g)
7 of 9
Describe the test for Sulphate Ions
(1) Add Hydrochloric acid (2) Add Barium Chloride (3) if Sulphate Ions are present; a white precipitate of Barium Sulphate will form
8 of 9
What is the purpose of adding hydrochloric acid in the test for sulphate ions?
It removes any other ions that may affect the results by forming a precipitate (eg carbonate ions)
